Pitt Street Mall is Australia's busiest and most cosmopolitan shopping precinct. It has more than 600 specialty stores and the retail giants Myer and David Jones are located within two blocks. It is also connected to Pitt Street on both ends, as it was originally part of the street that runs right through the Sydney CBD from Circular Quay through to the north of Waterloo. In the early 1900's there was a tram line that ran from Central Station to Circular Quay down Pitt Street and back to Central Station via Castlereagh Street. It was a very popular route in the early 1900’s before the Sydney underground train system opened, as it was quickest and easiest way down to the harbour if you were using public transport.
The area was recently redeveloped in 2010-2011, with the introduction of the new Westfield shopping centre as well as the mall getting a $10 million refurbishment which included new pavers, seating and lighting. It also included a new environmentally sustainable design which involved the diverting of stormwater off awnings and into tree pits, energy-efficient lighting, and sustainable materials were also used in other areas of the project. There has been a great change over time for the Pitt Street Mall along with development and growth in and around it. With it being Sydney's busiest retail precinct with over 65 000 people a day passing through, it is easy to believe that it would receive a great income to our economy.
